NCAA

With the college athletes being part of the product, is there current compensation package sufficient? Explain. Then respond to at least two other posts

  1. I'm in between on whether college athletes should be paid. A part of me says that they should be paid based on the fact that the NCAA is using the atheltes images basically as a selling point so that they can make money. Another part of me thinks that they shouldn't be paid becuase they are student athletes and they are going to college to get an education, not to make money by playing sports.

    1. I agree, especially considering how much their education would cost if it weren't for athletic scholarships.

    2. I think it is also wrong to use the student athletes image without consulting them first. No one is going to read a huge contract with all of the rules.

    3. I agree with you based on the fact that the NCAA is using the athletes for making money that they have nothing for the athlete on mind they are only thinking about making money.

    4. You're a wise man and I agree with your statement. The student athletes really are just that.. STUDENTS. They do not go to college to play the game but to further pursue their education.

  2. I don't think it is sufficient because a lot of the athletes strugle financially and they or their family need money to come to thwe games or even just to live

    1. It is wrong that the parents can't come to the games. The school should give tickets and/or pay for travel expenses for parents.

    2. I agree that the NCAA should pay for travel expenses. It's not fair for the players that bring in so much.

    3. I agree that being a student athlete in high school, it is hard to balance schoolwork and your sport. It would be twice as difficult to throw in a job as well so that you can pay for food and other things. If the students were paid to play then they wouldn't have so much on their plate.

  3. Many of these athletes are essentially given a free college education at some of the best schools in the country. This in itself is worth a considerable amount of money, and is what the athletes should be basing their future on. I do believe many athletes undervalue this free education which is more than enough compensation for playing a sport. However, I do think they should be paid a decent amount of money considering how much the schools benefit from their performances. Most of these athletes have little to no money and because of NCCA rules, are not able to work while on a scholarship. Unless the player comes from a well-off family, they do not have someone sending them money for expenses such as clothes, food, or any other expense that normal college students are able to work for.

    1. I also believe that athletes should not undervalue the education they are receiving, and should be allowed to work if they want to make ends meet.

    2. The athletes do undervalue education. They may have gotten a scholarship to play a sport, but they are going to college for an education, not a sport. I was watching ESPN one day and I think they said that Baylor's basketball team had a graduation rate of only 23%.

    3. Your right about the part that they get a free good education but they don't pass the classes. So they take these classes and when their years of college is over and they didn't have success at their sport then they have nothing after that that. I just think they should get a little money somewhere along the line.

    4. College athletes often don't value the benefits they are given enough. The NCAA should do something about the shockingly low graduation rate.

  4. I think that student athletes should not be taken advantage of by the NCAA, but I also do not think that they should go so far as to be paid directly like employees. NCAA athletes are given a full ride scholarship for their talents and they may take classes at Universities only some students could dream of going. The revenue that the NCAA or a school gains from championship wins or big game appearances should be split more evenly among who earns them, It doesn't have to be a paycheck the student athlete is receiving, it could help pay for meals, or help an athlete who may not receive a scholarship next year to play ball for whatever reason, pay for the academic tuition. They do not even have to be full ride scholarships either. I'm not an expert on the rules of financial revenue in the NCAA, but they could be a little more creative.

    1. I see a few things wrong with paying athletes based on winning championships. One thing is just the fact that only one team can win a championship. So why should only a few players out of all the athletes who play for schools that are a part of the NCAA get paid. It just doesn't seem fair to everyone else. The second thing is that when the major college sports, football and basketball, when they do win a championship, the money the school gains needs to be put towards other sports that aren't as popular, such as volleyball or hockey.

  5. I'm honestly in the middle. I think that they should be paid but then again i'm on the side thinking that they shouldn't. The reason they should be paid is because the NCAA makes 700 million dollars why cant you just give a little bit of it to the players that are making you the money. I really think that is unfair. Also in the movie where they said the NCAA wouldn't even pay for their parents travel fares, that is just ridiculous. I don't like what the NCAA is doing to the kids and sooner or later they are going to have to pay for it.

  6. I think that the NCAA should have to compensate players that they use for money through videogames and other types of promotion once they graduate or no longer play for the team. The school benefits are enough and it isn't professional so I don't think they should have salaries, however they should be compensated for anything the college uses their name for after they go to the NBA or graduate.

  7. That person is not making any money off their picture name and plays. The NCAA is making all the money while the person is left behind seeing their picture put out and they are left behind with nothing while others are making bonkers.

  8. I believe that the NCAA should give their basketball players somewhat of payment for two reasons. My first reason is that the franchise stated that about 90% of the NCAA mens basketball brings in the income to the organization. Also my second reason is that the players play their hearts out and sadly by the end of it their image is put into the next edition of NCAA basketball. That game also brings income to the organization and the players who are in it get absolutely no money. Without them the franchise would be lost.

  9. I'm going to have to say that I neither agree nor disagree to the argument of whether or not the athletes should be paid. My reasoning for this is that honestly, it isn't the players occupation to be out there playing basketball. However, I do think that if their names and faces are to be used anywhere, such as video games, they should get permission from the players and/or pay them as well. My last point is that the players main purpose of going to college is for their education which will lead up to the occupation of their choice, not to play a game. If they end up in the NBA well then congrats!
